Sun Protection Alternatives To Chemical Sunscreen
Whether you enjoy lying on the beach, fishing, camping, kayaking, or other outdoor activities, protecting your skin from the harmful rays of the sun is a must. While we all enjoy some fun in the sun, skin cancer is a serious concern for everyone. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, skin cancer is the most common cancer in the U.S. and is estimated to affect one in five Americans.
Undoubtedly, we all need to focus on sun protection to keep our skin healthy. When most people think of protecting their skin from the sun, their minds go straight to sunscreen. After all, many of us have felt the regret that comes from neglecting to apply sunscreen and developing a sunburn. We can’t help but wonder, is sunscreen really the best option for sun protection? A recent study might suggest otherwise.
Chemical Sunscreen Ingredients
Chemical sunscreens provide protection from UV rays with the use of one or more of these active chemicals: avobenzone, octocrylene, oxybenzone, octisalate, octinoxateare, or homosalate. This article points out some of the potentially harmful effects that might come from the active ingredients in a chemical sunscreen. According to the article and a recent study, the effect of chemical sunscreen usage is that the active ingredients in sunscreen are systemically absorbed after application. In this study, participants applied sunscreen every day for four days and had their blood tested afterward. On the seventh day, tests showed that chemicals remained in the blood, above FDA safety levels. Two of these chemicals, homosalate, and oxybenzone, were still above FDA safety levels on the twenty-first day. While chemical sunscreens perform the important function of sun protection, it is important to consider the effects that this type of sun protection may have.
Consider Alternative Sun Protection
Rather than give up on sun protection altogether, a better option may be to consider some alternatives. Chemical sunscreen is not the only way to protect yourself from sun damage, and as we’ve seen, it may not be the healthiest option. If you are concerned about the chemicals in sunscreen, sun protection clothing might be the right option for you.
Sun Protection Clothing
While most people are more familiar with sunscreen, sun protection clothing is really the most effective form of sun protection available. Unlike sunscreen, sun protection clothing does not rinse off, doesn’t expire, cannot be applied wrong, and doesn’t need to be reapplied throughout the day. UV protection clothes are also cost-saving considering you will not need to repurchase them as often as you would bottles of sunscreen.
Sun protection clothing comes in many varieties including sleeves that protect your arms and hands from UV rays. However, your limbs are not the only part of the body that needs protection from the sun. Your face is also readily exposed to the sun and should be prioritized. After all, you not only want to protect your skin’s health but it’s beauty as well.
